Learning math is hands-on and so much fun! Today, students in Mrs. Maulding's class used colorful counting blocks to construct their very own "neighborhoods." Each building was designed to represent numbers in different, creative ways while practicing foundational math concepts.

Learning Volume Through Play!

Mathematicians in Mr. Allre'ds class put their math skills—and their creativity—to work by creating their own games about volume! Then came the best part: getting to play the games their classmates designed!

Students practiced important volume concepts while problem-solving, collaborating, and learning from one another. When students become the game designers AND the players, learning takes on a whole new dimension!

Five elementary students are sitting cross-legged in a circle on a colorful classroom rug patterned with a map of the United States. In the center, they are focused on a handmade tabletop board game titled "SPACE" with colored path tiles, game pieces, and instruction cards. One girl in a grey hoodie holds a clipboard and smiles at the camera, while the other students gather around the board engaging in the activity.
Three students stand around a white table in a classroom during a learning activity. In the center, a student with curly red hair gives a thumbs-up gesture. To the right, a student wearing glasses and a black sweatshirt smiles toward the camera. On the left, another student looks on. On the table rest printed instructions and a custom red-and-black board game design with dice.
Two young male students stand behind a white classroom table, smiling at the camera. On the table between them is a homemade cardboard board game designed like a square path, featuring Lego bricks as player tokens, paper game cards, and small yellow circular counters stacked in the center.

A custom-designed board game printed on paper with red tiles, miniature player tokens, game cards, and a die sits on the white tabletop.
Four female students gather around a curved white table in a classroom setting. Two students in the foreground stand facing the table, looking down at a sheet of handwritten game rules titled "Good Luck" placed beside a colorful drawn game board. Two other students sit across the table, watching and writing on their own papers.

Mirette on the Highwire: Taking on Challenges!

After Ms. Moore read Mirette on the Highwire, students talked about what it means to face challenges, overcome obstacles, and keep trying when something seems impossible.

Then it was time for a challenge of their own:

Can you put your head through a notecard?

At first, it sounded impossible—but our students put their problem-solving skills, creativity, and perseverance to work! Some created an opening large enough for their entire body, and one group even managed to fit THREE people through their notecard!

What a fun way to connect literature with critical thinking and remind ourselves that sometimes a challenge just requires us to look at the problem in a different way!

Be sure to check out our First Day of School and First Week of School Photo Albums for more pics!
